Assistant Financial Controller – West USA

Our client, owner of a luxury hotel group, is seeking an Assistant Financial Controller to join their accounting team at one of their best performing properties based in Utah, USA. Offering guests bespoke adventures and cultural activities in and around one of the National Parks, this resort property also features a water pavilion, sauna, steam room, cold plunge and outdoor private pavilions. Guests can also enjoy sustainable, seasonal menus inspired by the culinary heritage of the American Southwest served indoors and alfresco.

The main scope of the role will be to assist the Financial Controller with the overall daily administration of the accounting department and its functions including accurate and timely recording of transactions, reporting, and maintenance and compliance with the company’s internal controls framework.

Other duties include:

  • Direct oversight of accounting staff including training and development.
  • Assist with monitoring, assessing, and maintaining internal controls and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations, including bank reconciliations and others.
  • Prepare various monthly closing entries and assist with the month end close process, analysis and reporting.
  • Prepare and assist with Monthly Forecasting.
  • Prepare & file monthly Sales & Use Taxes.
  • Supports management in controlling costs within the budget and forecast.
  • Assist with completion of annual budgeting process.
  • Assist with internal and external audits.
  • Assist Financial Controller with all other accounting functions and administration.

Candidate Requirements

  • At least 5 years accounting experience, preferably within a luxury hotel/resort environment.
  • Degree in Accounting / Finance / Business is essential, and an accounting designation is desirable.
  • Experience supervising small teams.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and knowledge of standard filing systems with excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Knowledge of or experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Internet.
  • Experience and working knowledge of SunSystems or other large accounting system, Opera, Micros/Symphony and Birchstreet

The individual that our client is seeking will have the responsibility for Financial Planning & Analysis and Financial Activities.

Duties include:

  • Regularly reviewing the company’s budget to ensure the company GOP objectives
  • Analysing investments in aspects of cost and benefits, evaluating other options
  • Vendor negotiation and contract management in collaboration with the purchasing clerk and the vendor system of the owner
  • Monthly and yearly inventory management system in collaboration with the departments
  • Reviewing the company’s financial statements to ensure they are accurate
  • Providing accurate financial reports to management
  • Expense reduction initiatives
  • Recommending changes to improve financial performance
  • Reviewing policies or procedures that will improve financial performance

Position Summary:
As the Cluster Financial Controller, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless operation of the finance function across multiple hotels. Key responsibilities include:

  • Clear and consistent management of controls and compliance
  • Ensuring that the high level of reporting standards are being maintained

  • Assist with the capital expenditure process, work with GM’s and senior team members to ensure accuracy of applications and submissions of requests.
  • ESG responsibility to include the monitoring of energy, gas, water & waste. To effectively communicate consumption and to fully support the ESG committee.
